The visible crown of a tooth is protected by enamel. The root is not. When the gum margin moves farther down the root, more of that root surface becomes exposed to brushing, plaque, temperature and the oral environment.

Why Can Gum Recession Cause Sensitivity or Raise Root-Decay Risk?
The tooth root is not built like the enamel covered crown. Once exposed, it needs different protection.
Root Sensitivity
Exposed root cementum is thin. If underlying dentin becomes exposed, microscopic tubules can transmit temperature, air or touch changes toward the pulp.
- Cold, air, touch or sweets may trigger a brief sharp sensation.
- Not every exposed root becomes sensitive.
- Desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride or other conservative care may help depending on the cause.
Root Decay Risk
